Centerpoint Mission Statement
A COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS CREATING THE FUTURE
We are a dynamic community of learners who nurture creativity, independent
thinking, and social responsibility through: a supportive environment, the
development
of learning tools, and the use of systematic educational processes.
Dynamic - this is a progressive, continually improving
program embracing the future with strength and purpose.
Community of learners - all program participants are learners and
teachers. All model the love of learning, desire to learn, and
excitement about gaining
knowledge to improve their lives, interactions and self-esteem. As
a family-oriented community, there is a bond between and among participants
that builds a
sense of pride and common goals.
Nurture creativity - because all children are
creative, participants encourage and provide fertile ground for
creative thoughts,
events and activities through innovative use of resources and
a hands-on approach.
Nurture independent thinking - students have opportunities to
develop interests, individual projects, problem-solving strategies,
and
individual learning styles
and abilities.
Nurture social responsibility - students learn to
be a contributor to their school, family and community by developing
attitudes
of caring, concern and empathy.
A supportive environment - home and school
collaborate on the educational process. Goal setting, family
groups, parental
involvement and community resources are vital to the program.
Development of learning tools - needed tools
for learning are taught through collaborative learning,
individual and group problem-solving,
non-competitive assessment, peer tutoring and mentoring,
multi-aged groups, higher level thinking skills and goal
setting. Essential
skills in communications,
mathematics, sciences, social sciences and related arts,
are the
foundation upon which outcomes are established. Learning
by doing, themes and integrated
units inform instruction. Defined standards, indicators
of learning, self-evaluation, and authentic assessments provide
the basis
for reporting progress.
Systematic educational processes - these
processes are based on research of effective practices
and progressive
thinking. They
represent the areas of program design and organization
including curriculum development, assessment, progressive
reporting,
parent involvement, instruction,
goal-setting, action-planning, M.E.E.P. procedures, and program
evaluation.
